Gang rape of child in Delhi draws sharp reaction from TMC

Coming down heavily on the BJP, Chandrima Bhattacharya, president Trinamul Mahila Congress said the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, a scheme by the Centre is the biggest farce.

She was reacting after an 11-year-old girl was gang raped in Delhi.

She said: “When a crime against a girl or woman takes place in the double engine state, the Centre remains quiet. No member of the National Women Commission is sent to that place and on the contrary, the rapists are garlanded after they are set free by the court.”

She said in Delhi, the law and order is under the home ministry. There is the BJP government and the civic body is under the saffron party. “It is then a triple engine government and when a crime against a girl takes place then everyone is silent,” she said.

Mrs Bhattacharya said when the BJP leaders come to Bengal they talk about change. “Time has come when they should change their mindset. They have no respect for women. They talk big but in practice they do exactly opposite of what they have preached,” she maintained.

Calling the BJP as a “party of hypocrites”, she said: “The BJP export fish and beef and when money comes they are happy. But they openly criticise those who eat fish and beef. Such a hypocritical party the BJP is,” she remarked.

Partha Bhowmik, Trinamul Congress MP, said: “BJP wants to take India back to the dark ages when girls did not have any freedom. They were not allowed to leave their homes and they were not allowed to study or go to school,” he said.

He said in Madhya Pradesh and Odisha, rape has become a regular event. In Odisha in the past 10 days, five incidents of rape have been reported. “If in Bengal such incidents take place in Bengal, the offender is arrested and punished. Delhi has become the capital of rape and crime,” he observed.

He said if the BJP is voted to power in Bengal then “they will force us to eat vegetarian food and there will be no personal freedom.”
